Storm Drain Stewardship Project

Richmond Success Academy and The James River Association (JRA)

Dr. Marla Faith Crawford, the 7th Graders, and the 8th Graders participated in the “Paint Out Pollution!” with the support of Ms. Helene Carrington. Paint Out Pollution is a project that increases public awareness of stormwater pollution and celebrates the native plant and animal species that call the James River home through storm drain art. The program objective is designed to educate the community about the adverse effects that trash and other contaminants have on our waterways. Luckie Lyons, Administrative Technician, Senior, City of Richmond Department of Public Utilities Geographic Information Systems (GIS) provided the community mapping for identifying the storm drains around the school. Support for the educational experience of the students was also provided by the following stakeholders for Richmond City Department of Public Utilities: Thomas A. Hampton – CSR, Erica Younger – CSR, Mathew Irvin – CSR, Paul Giglo – DPU, Peter Madzudzo – DPU, and Biranna L. Bannister-Meadows – CSR.

Students utilized multilayer stencils of native species (channel catfish and belted kingfisher) that habitat in or around the James River on storm drains. The message, “Only Rain Down the Drain”, was also stenciled next on the storm drains.

The students at RSA are doing their part to bring about community awareness of the impact of pollution on the James River.
